ARCHITECTURE & ENVIRONMENT

The module introduces human intervention affecting the environment both positively and negatively, the components of environmental conditions and issues and the relationship of buildings with the natural system. It aims to increase environmental awareness through lectures and discussions. Additionally the module introduces students to the basic elements of climate and their influences on architecture, which aims to facilitate students to create acceptable environmentally conscious and comfortable building designs.

Task 4: Case Study: Shading and Lighting

Duration : 6 Weeks (9th February 2021 by 5pm)

Marks: 40%

Objectives:

•To identify passive design strategies for Shading and Lighting.

•To analyze the effect of thermal comfort/ comfort factors in a person and in a space relating to Shadingand Lighting.

•To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525 , UBBLand GBI.

•To be able to suggest passive solutions for Shading and Lighting.

Reflection

I have definitely learned a lot from this module, it opened my mind to what Architecture is truly about. This module helped further develop my understanding on what it means to be an architect that is conscious about the world and environment. It thought me a lot about design and sustainability aspect as well as various strategies on passive designs and their principles. I am also beyond grateful to have such amazing teammates that have shown exemplary teamwork and effort all throughout this assignment. Our discussions went smoothly and our teamwork was on point, and by that we have successfully produced these boards through our combined collaborative efforts. I have learned to identify environmental factors in relation to natural or passive building design strategies used to achieve comfort level of building designs. I would like to thank all the lecturers that have taught me this semester, Dr.Suja , Dr.Salvi and the other respected lecturers for sharing with me their vast knowledge, wisdom and guiding me all throughout this module.
